TEAMWORK. Enya is a collective effort of a trio formed in the 1980s consisting of three different artists working together to produce a distinctive-sounding, peaceful, ethereal, and dreamy quality kind of music. from the artist herself whom we see performing on the videos; a sound engineer and producer; and a linguist and poet. credits should be divided among the Team. Enya Brennan herself is the front act responsible for the creation of the song melodies, performing the songs and doing the instruments, which to be later arranged, engineered and polished by Nicky Ryan—her producer—who's responsible for the magical song arrangements that we now listen on tracks. her lyrics are specially written for her songs in English, Gaelic (Celtic Irish), Latin, and Loxian languages which made her songs stood up from the rest of her contemporaries. her lyricist, Roma Ryan, is responsible for her album theme, also happened to be the wife of her producer Nicky Ryan.
transporting and touching, they produce pieces that dig down to your core like beautiful paintings with stories and metaphors bringing us back to our childhood, or that part of our lives that are most solitary and serene. their music evokes feelings that is too personal and different from each and every listener. the sound itself is unique of its kind that anyone can relate on to different levels. i’m a lover of fine things, and theirs is one a good example of sophistication.
A DIFFERENT FEEL. there's this combined influence of perceptive new age, classical, and church music, and with a touch of musical score. Enya is a product of Nicky Ryan’s experimentation which has brought him Enya to record and use her voice as an instrument itself. like i said, Enya is a choir of one, aside from the solo parts, hundreds of layers of her voice are recorded over and over again at certain parts of a song to create a wall of voice, which her music became known for. the process would take each album 3 to 5 years in the making. not to mention 7 years for their most recent Dark Sky Island (well, breaks included).
mostly, her songs are about appreciation of nature and diversity of life and its cycle; feelings and impressions; memoirs of journey, adventure, happiness, and even death. the subjects are as vast as the universe and as infinite as time, the more you listen to the songs, the more you are drawn-to with curiosity. the kind that appeals to your mind and soul and doesn’t fade too soon.
as magical and surreal her songs are, some of her videos specially the old ones, didn’t level up to the sublimity of her music. i hoped the visuals matched its transcendence but not quite, you may or may not agree. but pure in all its thoughts, taste is very personal, i may have a different visual perception from the others compared. it’s like, there are some of my friends who still couldn't understand my admiration to the Artist. i just shrug, and in turn, don’t also understand them. lol.
i'm fortunate that for years of search i finally found the artists behind this out of this worldly, enamoring harmonics. and was lucky enough that i lived during her era. needless to say, Enya is my all-time favorite artist that i will never get tired of listening. as i was writing this entry, i thought i would mention 5 of my most favorites amongst her songs from her already 8 award-winning studio albums yet i can't, simply because i couldn't. there will be too many to miss with just having five.
if you happen to also know this artist well, let me hear your thoughts about them and their music. would be happy to read your personal experiences with Enya’s thought-provoking sound on the comments.
